Sviatoslav Richter

In 1915 Sviatoslav Richter was born in Zhitomir in the Ukraine. He was a Russian pianist known for the depth of his interpretations, virtuoso technique, and vast repertoire. He is considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. 1

In 1914 George Butterworth’s The Banks of Green Willow was premiered in London.

On This Day in Classical Music

In 1734 Charles Avison’s music is premiered at a concert at the start of his musical career.

In 1807 a fire caused 40,000 pounds damage at Clementi & Co., a music publishing and instrument maker that had Muzio Clementi as one of its investors.

In 1836 Felix Mendelssohn was given an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree by the University of Leipzig.

In 1843 Anton Rubenstein made his concert debut before Tsar Nicholas I in St. Petersburg. He was fourteen-years-old.

In 1864 Hector Berlioz retired as music critic of the Journal des debats.

In 1928 the New York Symphony and the New York Philharmonic Society united to form the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York, but we know it today as The New York Philharmonic.

In 1948 the first televised concert of a symphony orchestra is broadcast over the CBS television network – it is of the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy. They beat out NBC by an hour-and-a-half, when they televised Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

In 1952 the Committee for Artistic Affairs petitions the Soviet Government to grant a monthly pension to Sergei Prokofiev, who was ill.
